โฆ Synopsis
The effect of electric fields on the formation of clusters of egg phosphatidylcholine liposomes has been studied around the flocculation points caused by Ga g+ ions. The form of the clusters of liposomes varies from a linear array to a rather dendritic structure depending on the magnitude of the electric field strength. This fact shows that the interparticle interaction force between liposomes can be modified from intrinsic forces to induced forces by external fields. The induced force originating from the interaction between induced dipole moments on each liposome depends on the concentration of Ca 2+ ions in dispersion medium. It is found that the magnitude of the induced dipole moments estimated from the conductivity data of liposome dispersions can qualitatively explain the form of liposome clusters formed in the flocculation region by Ca 2+ ions.
