Castration was previously demonstrated to result in an increase in liver alcohol dehydrogenase and in rates of ethanol elimination in male rats. In this study, the effect of dihydrotestosterone, which is a more potent androgen than testosterone in the rat, was determined on liver alcohol dehydrogena

β¦ Synopsis
Animals and Chemicals. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were obtained from Charles River Laboratories (Wilmington, MA). All animals received humane care in compliance with the guidelines from the Animal Care and Use Committee of the Johns Hopkins University. Dulbecco' s modified Eagle' s medium (DMEM), fetal bovine serum (FBS), penicillin-steptomycin, cesium chloride, and guanidinium isothiocyanate were purchased from Life Technologies (Gaithersburg, MD). Leucine-free DMEM, collagenase (type IV), Trypan Blue, bovine serum albumin (BSA), fetuin, transferrin, linoleic acid, sodium selenite, and dexamethasone were purchased from Sigma Chemical Company (St. Louis, MO).

The effect of growth hormone on the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase was determined in hepatocyte culture from normal and hypophysectomized male rats. Alcohol dehydrogenase activity was highest in hepatocytes harvested from hypophysectomized rats. The enzyme activity remained stable in hepatocytes

We studied the effect of thyroxine on alcohol dehydrogenase activity, immunoreactive protein levels and messenger RNA levels in the livers of thyroidectomized and sham-operated male rats. Effects on kidney alcohol dehydrogenase activity were also examined. Shamoperated rats injected with 100 pg thyr
The effect of interferon (IFN)-beta and IFN-gamma on P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated efflux of rhodamin-123(Rho-123), a typical substrate of P-gp, was studied in rat hepatocytes in primary culture. After treatment with IFN-beta, IFN-gamma, or both for 3 days, steady-state levels of Rho-123, incorpora
Urea cycle is a hepatic metabolic pathway involving five enzymes and several intermediary metabolites and can be altered by different chemicals. To investigate the effect of arsenic, an ubiquitous hepatotoxic agent, on urea production we exposed long-term cultures of adult rat hepatocytes, which pro
