β¦ Synopsis
The thermal degradation of anionically modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETSTA/K) has been studied over the temperature range 293-773 K in nitrogen and air. Dynamic thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and i.r. spectroscopy were used. It has been stated that the incorporation of metal sulphonate groups into the poly(ethylene terephthalate) matrix affects the thermal stability of the copolyester, especially at temperature above 693 K. The temperature of the onset of decomposition decreases with increasing content of the ionic co-units in the polymer chains. The thermal stability of PETSTA/K is less in air than in an inert atmosphere and the decomposition mechanism is more complex.
