✦ Synopsis
Dental alloys, having a wide range of compositions and different matrices, were analyzed with energydispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDXRS) and glow discharge optical spectrometry (GDOS) to verify and discuss the capabilities of EDXRS in dental alloy characterization and to compare the EDXRS data with the GDOS data. The metallurgical characterization of some alloys was performed by means of optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, combined with energy-dispersive spectrometry, to investigate their microstructure and homogeneity. A reference sample was used as to calibrate the spectrometer for each matrix type. The EDXRS analysis conformed to the requirements of dental alloy manufacturers and standards. The EDXRS results are in good agreement with the data obtained by GDOS.

Short-term stress relaxation of four dental amalgam alloys was studied. Test materials included two conventional lathe-cut restoratives, a spherical alloy, and a dispersed phase product. Specimens were 24-hr-old 4 X 8-mm cylinders. The specimens were compressed and held a t constant strain on develo
## Abstract Improved techniques in preparing and sizing dental alloy powders containing Ag, Sn, and Cu have led to amalgams with higher strengths and less spread in dimensional change but very poor shelf life. Since maximum strengths occurred for amalgams containing about 15% more Sn than previousl
## Abstract Splat cooling has been used for the preparation of dental alloy in the form of ribbons of 5–25 μm in thickness. The powdered alloy was produced by shaking the ribbons with a dental pestle in a mechanical amalgamator. One minute shaking produced a powder all of which passed a standard 40
## Abstract The behaviour of Ag‐Sn alloy and Ag‐Sn‐Hg dental amalgam alloy has been studied under potentiostatic conditions in artificial saliva and in sodium chloride solutions containing 0.2% NaCl (alone or mixed with sodium hydrogen phosphate). It has been shown that Sn and Ag as well as the int
