EDITORS' FOREWORD

This issue of the Journal of Computer and System Sciences is a special issue dedicated to the Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS). The conference was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, November 20 22, 1994. It contains six articles which were considered by the program committee to be among the best in the conference. The authors were invited to submit complete versions to the special issue, which were then refereed according to the usual referee process.

It is a pleasure to thank many people: the authors, the referees for their speedy work on this issue, and finally the program committee of FOCS 1994 for all the work they have done to make this a successful issue.
