✦ Synopsis

The programme was focussed on the rapidly growing field of proteome analysis, the latest technical and analytical developments, and their application to medicine, drug development, toxicology, microbial and plant proteomes, and biotechnology. During the meeting more than 80 lectures and 150 posters were presented on these topics, and these were complemented by a series of well-attended and informative luncheon and evening seminars organised by commercial participants. The almost explosive growth in interest in the science of proteomics can be judged by the large number of delegates (around 900) participating in the meeting from all continents around the world. The meeting attracted a large number of manuscript submissions and we hope that the papers published in this Proceedings will give an indication of the quality of the meeting to those who were unable to attend and will provide a useful record of the meeting for those who participated. We would like to thank the authors and referees for their prompt handling of the manuscripts and the publishers for their patience in the production of these Proceedings.
