โœฆ Synopsis

of approximately A5 size. The subjects covered included rotational Raman spectra of 1,3,5-triร‘uorobenzene and hexaร‘uorobenzene ; vibrational spectra and polymorphism of chiral compounds ; selection rules in pure rotation and vibration-rotation hyper Raman spectra ; Raman spectra of crystalline carbon suboxide ; localised vibrations in doped GaP ; and a new instrument for photographic recording of rotation-vibration Raman spectra using laser excitation.

Initially the journal was published bi-monthly ; in 1987 the number of issues per year was increased to eight and since January 1989 it has appeared monthly. The number of papers published has continued to grow steadily and our page budget has been increased yet again for 1998. Keynote issues devoted to topics of current interest have become a regular feature. We thank the Raman community for their continuing support.

In conclusion, it is of interest to note that this editorial is being written in March 1998, almost exactly 70 years after the discovery of the Raman e โ€ ect was announced in an issue of Nature dated March 31, 1928. The ever increasing interest in Raman spectroscopy would have greatly pleased C. V. Raman who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 for his discovery.
