✦ Synopsis

This issue contains 12 of the main lectures given at the GEORAMAN 96 Conference held in Nantes, France, 10È12 June 1996. This conference, which followed an earlier one held in Toulouse, France in 1989 was concerned with the application of Raman spectroscopy, particularly Raman microscopy, to a wide range of topics broadly, but not exclusively, related to the geosciences. The abstracts of all the 58 contributions presented at this conference have been published elsewhere."

We are grateful to Professor David C. Smith (conference chairman), and S. Lefrant, B. Larnier and P. Gatel (members of the organizing committee) for encouraging authors to submit full papers on their work in this rapidly growing area.
