✦ Synopsis
In September 2002 the 53 rd Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) took place in Düsseldorf, Germany. As part of this meeting that covered all aspects of electrochemistry the symposium 8 was organized on electrochemical energy conversion. This symposium featured as topics batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells. The latter was quite dominant in the program. In order to document the progress in this research area a special issue was planned. The articles contained in this double issue give a nice overview over the current activities in electrochemically oriented fuel cell research. Although we delayed the publication of this issue quite substantially we were still not able to get all articles of the symposium into this issue. So in the next issue you will still find some articles that relate to this ISE symposium; they will be properly identified as such.
Let me take the opportunity to communicate to you some changes on the Editorial Board and the Editorial Office. Prof. Jürgen Garche from Ulm joined the Editorial Board and Dr.
