This is the second of two issues dedicated to the design and applications of intelligent systems. It contains seven papers from universities and research establishments. These papers reflect the recent trend of using techniques such as expert systems, fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorit

β¦ Synopsis
This is the second part of a two part special issue of Concurrency: Practice and Experience which focuses on Commercial and Industrial Applications. The papers published represent a broad spectrum of commercial-strength applications which are now commonly being run on parallel and distributed computers.
The papers deal with; scientific applications using portable and scalable libraries, commercial codes that have been integrated and visualised using Advanced Visualisation System (AVS) and the experiences of porting a large number of European commercial and industrial codes to a message passing environment.
Two facts should be highlighted. Firstly, parallel applications are now being developed using libraries and tools that enable the usage of truly heterogeneous environments. The applications discussed in these papers can be run on high-end MPPs or networks of workstations. Secondly, it should be re-emphasised that these are "real" commercial and industrial codes that are capable of running on parallel and distributed computers.
The papers published in this special issue provide further evidence that the use of parallel computing techniques to solve complex problems in commerce and industry is now widespread and can now be viewed as the norm rather than the exception.
