✦ Synopsis

Welcome to the January 2005 issue of ChemPhysChem! Since the first issue was published in August 2000, ChemPhysChem has developed into a top journal for publications in chemical physics and physical chemistry. With an ISI Impact Factor of 3.316 ChemPhysChem is a most widely read journal in its field, which contains contributions selected with the highest standards. In 2004, for the first time, the journal received more than 500 manuscripts submitted from 45 different countries. This represents an increase in submissions by 17 % compared to 2003 (Figure 1). By the end of last year we had surpassed all expectations publishing more than 1900 pages (Figure 1) of original high-quality work while maintaining our well-known short publication times. We also started publishing all Chem-PhysChem articles as Early Views. Early View articles are available electronically at Wiley InterScience even weeks before the complete issues appear.

In scientific publishing the use of the internet has become standard. In 2004 we adopted a new manuscript management system-manuscriptXpress-which many of you may have used for submission as well as for refereeing of manuscripts. A representative survey among manuscriptXpress users showed that the overwhelming majority is pleased with this new service, which will nevertheless be further improved in 2005. For authors manuscriptXpress provides more transparency, as the

ChemPhysChem is a European journal of chemical physics and physical chemistry; its publication was made possible by important contributions from the Socie ´te ´Franc ˛aise de Chimie (SFC) and the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh), and the Hungarian, Austrian, French Belgian and Flemish Belgian, Czech, Portuguese, and Greek chemical societies are further co-owners. Contributions in ChemPhysChem cover a wide range of topics including atmospheric science, hard and soft condensed matter, femtochemistry, nanotechnology, complex biological systems, single molecule research, clusters, colloids, catalysis, and surface science; namely, research in the overlapping areas between chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science. ChemPhysChem publishes Communications and occasionally Articles as well as Reviews, Minireviews, Highlights, Concepts, and Book Reviews.
