This issue of Mass Spectrometry Reviews contains the first of several review articles contributed by members of the mass spectrometry community in Australia to showcase the research being undertaken here. They were encouraged by the journals CoEditor, Carlito Lebrilla, who visited the region in early 2007.

As has been reported elsewhere Downard & DeLaeter, 2005, mass spectrometry has a long and distinguished history in Australia ranging from instrument design and development to the application of mass spectrometry across the physical, chemical, biological and biomedical sciences. The forthcoming ANZSMS22 conference will celebrate 60 years of mass spectrometry in Australia.
