2003 is a very special year with manifold activities. In Germany it was designated the Year of Chemistry, and internationally it is the Year of Freshwater. This should supply a fine basis for our common aim to increase the knowledge of hydrochemistry and hydrobiology. Obvious from many papers, both have merged more and more in research, a sign of transdisciplinary approaches which has also become visible in the academic curricula. New aspects like the one of molecular biology or of life science engineering have attracted numerous outstanding students giving rise to the hope that this might help to put the magic word of "sustainability" into reality. So let us work actively on our future by helping to supply all the necessary scientific basis for a peaceful life. Even though this is a great challenge for our research and teaching, the aim to be reached is a promising one. In these days of
