valued JSV Editorial Board member of long standing, died at the age of 61 on the "rst of September 2001, having been ill since April 2001. When notifying us of his death, his Secretary at Sussex University said &&we miss him very much'', to which I can add that his JSV editorial and academic colleagues elsewhere do also. He has left us the legacy of his pioneering book with Pol Spanos, on Random <ibration and Statistical ¸inearization, along with many other contributions to our knowledge of the uses of stochastic averaging for dealing with speci"c non-linear dynamic problems.

The untimely death of Brian Roberts is bad news for JSV. But I can also report some good news. This is that Professor L. FryH ba of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and Professor R. Singh of Ohio State University, have agreed to become members of the JSV Editorial Board. This strengthens the representation on the Board of their "elds of interest, particularly the vibration of structures subjected to moving loads (FryH ba) and machinery dynamics (Singh).
