✦ Synopsis

The rates of edible oil hydrogenation m the presence of a homogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalyst has been measured m a falhng-film reactor with a view to the ultimate determmatlon of the hydrogenledlble od mterfacml area m an agtated tank under a fast reaction regme The catalyst 1s a combmahon of nickel dusopropyl sahcylate (N$dlps)z) and alummmm trusobutyl (Al(rBu)~) The reaction rates have been determmed by measurmg hydrogen absorption rates mto soyabean and &lower 011s under a fast reaction regme (Ha > 3) The gas absorption has been measured as a function of pressure, temperature, catalyst concentration, molar ratto (a) of Al(iBu)~ to Nl(dlps)z and concentration of unsaturated tnglycendes m the ads (lodme value, I V ) The hydrogenation rates can be described by R2 = K,,c' ' for 50 < I V < 130 and RI = Kc' 'b" " for 5 < I V i 50 (c = concentration of hydrogen m oil, b = concentration of unsaturated tr@ycendes m od), under the condltlons 5 x 10" < P/(Pa) < 14 x IO', 55 < T/("C) < 95, 1 5 x lo-' i NI(&ps)J(kmol m-) < 2 75 x lo-* and 4 i a < 10
