But they are thrown together when both are rescued from dead-eyed assassins by a strange man named Darius, who teleports them out of danger and into the secret compound of the Tyon Collectivea renegade group of intergalactic defenders out to stop the world-devouring entity known as Rhozan. It is explained that Earth was interbred with aliens generations ago so that certain humans would develop the power to fight Rhozan, and that includes Riley and especially Alec, whose powers are unlike anything the Tyons have encountered before. Elements of this tale feel rushed: the backstory, the evidence that the world is falling apart, and the specifics of the magical orbs wielded by the good guys. But MacDonald knows how to string together action scenes for maximum excitement, from a subway attack to a boat explosion to zombie-style onslaughts.
