✦ Synopsis

A halophilic purple sulfur spirillum, previously reported by the authors and called SL-1, has been characterized as a new species of the genus Ectothiorhodospira, E. halophila. The organism can grow in media containing from 9~ NaC1 to 30~ NaC1. It needs no vitamins. Suceinate or acetate can be used as hydrogen donors, but a reduced sulfur source is necessary for growth. The temperature optimum is 47~ The cells are bipolarly flagellated, not monopolarly flagellated as previously reported.
