As the fastest-gr~wj~g sector of the tourism industry ecotour&m offers tourism ~5mpa~ies and Third World destinations aiike the prospect of capitalizing off the comparative advantage of these nations in terms of u~spoi/ed natura/ envjru~menfs. By definition, such development sfwufd benefit destinations more in terms of small-scale, local inv5~vement with fewer adverse impacts. The opportUnity for these countries to enhance their deve~~ment pota~iiai by harnessing their natural resources without, at the same time, destroying them cannot be denied. What is essential, however, is the r~~~i~on that, without adequate #ndersfa~~~ of ffndert~i~g factors and careful plannjffg and management, ecotourjsm may include unsustalnabie aspects.
