β¦ Synopsis
Analytical approximations are developed to nested summations over spins, occurring in the Hauser-Feshbach nuclear-reaction model for continuum emission. It is shown that these approximations considerably speed up computations of angle-integrated cross-sections and emission spectra, without loosing accuracy. Furthermore, they do not destroy the angular-momentum information as is the case in the Weisskopf-Ewing model. The approximations are also useful in generalizations of the Hauser-Feshbach model to multiple particle emission and to multi-step (pre-)compound models.
