Stoecklin and Vetillart, in their works for enlarging the harbor of Calais, found great difficulty in sinking the piles and plankings through the fine, moist beach-sand. The use of water to facilitate the penetration of broken iron piles, suggested its use on the outside and in advance of the wooden
