✦ Synopsis
examined and investigated between April 1975 and May 1982 either in Denmark itself (40%) or in other countries. Every victim was attended clinically by two doctors who had been trained specifically for this purpose. The findings are presented in a systematic fashion under the various anatomical systems and the text is accompanied by a very extensive bibliography, several case histories, an index and samples of the questionnaires used.
One presumes that the main scope for this supplement is to bear witness to the continuing existence of "man's gross inhumanity to man", and through the medium of a reputable scientific medical publication to expose to the professional world, the ongoing prevalence and diversity of this barbaric phenomenon, thereby hoping that no one in the medical profession any longer serves, in any capacity, as an accessory to this crime. The hurdle of "belief in the victim" is probably the hardest to vault over and this publication assists in putting this matter into its proper perspective. By its intrinsic nature this subject is very emotionally fraught, and this publication cannot but upset even the more hardened medical reader. The presentation of the findings is made in a didactic and scientific fashion and is stripped bare of unnecessary melodrama and political comment. It would be helpful if this monograph were to be followed by a similar publication in which the efforts at rehabilitation and counselling of these patients, and the effects thereof, are discussed.
This publication is strongly recommended as essential reading for any medicolegal practitioner and any other doctor who may come into contact with torture victims.
