Various authorities have indicated the signiยฎcance of sociocultural inยฏuences in the development of eating disorders . In particular, the attitudes present in Western society towards extreme slenderness in women is frequently viewed as one of several predisposing factors leading to the expression of anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia nervosa.
Early sociocultural research in settings and occupations that highlight the importance of body weight, shape and competitiveness has underpinned the popular belief found in both the mass media and scientiยฎc literature that eating disorders prevail among those professions in which there exists an increased focus on a thin body shape. Female ballet dancers, athletes and models are frequently mentioned high risk groups. Indeed, a substantial amount of research has been focused on verifying this hypothesis in ballet dancers
