✦ Synopsis

Optical imaging is developing strongly along many lines, from new fluorescent contrast modes, advanced labelling techniques to imaging at resolutions beyond the resolution limits set by diffraction. Of this the yearly Focus on Microscopy conference on advanced light microscopies provided ample evidence. Osaka University generously hosted the 2008 edition from 13-16 April 2008 at Awaji Island near Osaka, offering a unique and beautiful setting for a meeting, characterised by strong contributions coming both from Asia and other continents.
