This book is based on a popular British radio serial broadcast in the 1980s.
Challenger is one of three starships designed to search for a suitable planet for Earthβs excess population. It is controled by humans with the help of two computers, Angel One and Angel Two. By the time of the second-generation crew, the computers believe the earthsearch mission will never succeed and that they are far better equipped mentally to handle the Challenger. But they need humans to pilot the starship. The Guardian Angels reason that this can be done by destroying all the adults and by conditioning the children to obey them without question.
