✦ Synopsis

chapter or more reference to the communicative function of crying. There is impressive evidence from different research approaches (e.g. quantitative genetic research, social interaction research) on how extremes of behaviour lead to shaping the specific environment for the infant. Do cry babies get fed more, carried more, encounter fewer social contacts because other adults are not too happy with the screaming? Do they change the family environment? Furthermore, there is no systematic review of current treatment options and what we know from empirical studies works best. This would have been highly relevant for those working clinically with colic babies.

Nevertheless, this is a state of the art book. It is recommended reading for all those working with infants, either in research or clinically. It also provides food for thought on developmental processes for those who would not normally consider reading about crying behaviour.
