Given the explosive growth in the use of the Internet in recent years, businesses must become aware of the potential legal dangers in using electronic communications, with defamation being one of the most serious.The risk of defamation is increased by the sheer informality and spontaneity of E-mail, which make it quite unlike conventional forms of communication. Recent defamation actions, however, show a marked difference in the way this issue is dealt with in the UK and US.
