โฆ Synopsis
Dysplasias are disturbances of the development of tissues (for example, spots, warts, callosities, etc.). Therefore, the term histodysplasia, of French origin, is redundant and its use should be avoided. Dysplasia should never be confounded with malformation. This word designates the result of disturbances of the development of much more complex structures. Examples include cleft lip and palate, imperforate anus, spina bifida, phocomelia and acheiropodia. Dysplasias and malformations may be seen together in the same nosological entity, forming the so-called dysplasia and malformation syndromes, such as the hypohidrotic odontotricomelic syndrome.
As regards malignancy, dysplasias can be subdivided into three categories:
