โฆ Synopsis
Some new ways to probe the dynamics of spatially extended systems giving rise to spatio-temporal chaos are explored. Coarse-grained observables suitable for describing large scale behavior are introduced by locally averaging the original variables over a spatial region and their stability, spatial correlation function and statistical properties are compared to those of the original variables. In general these observables do not obey closed form equations. Truncation schemes in which highorder Fourier modes or variables other than the coarse-grained ones are discarded are developed and their sensitivity to the parameters is assessed.
