The standard classical models for the interaction between the electromagnetic field and a polariser are described by a contractive semigroup which pushes the field asymptotically to a polarised state. In the quantised theory the field tends to the reduced state describing a polarised photon without needing the intervention of a projection. 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
