โœฆ Synopsis

We present an improved model of middle-latitude multiform forest [1] for local ecology prediction. Simulation deals with numerical solving the dynamical system of difference equations for forest biomass density. We employ a technique based upon well-known Leslie matrixes [2]. Each equation represents evolution of biomass of certain form and age group in fixed spatial point. In this manner for 2-form forest divided into 10 age groups, the system includes 2 x 10 x I0,000 equations (providing 100 x 100 spatial grid is used). Additional equations describe resources, water balance, etc. Groups of equations for different spatial points are slightly bound, generally by birth of new biomass process. It is possible to construct analytic,'d solution and phase portraits for simplest conditions of the basic lumped model. Use of these solutions in the general model results in realistic evolution of forest according to numerical simulation. Software package and some practical results are disclosed.

An Appalachian-oak forest in a small montane watershed was sampled to calibrate and test an existing forest dynamics simulation model. Indices developed in earlier studies by Whittaker were used to estimate the response of different tree species to soil moisture. As is the case in many forest modeli
