✦ Synopsis
The general angular distribution of photofragments from the dissociation of an oriented molecule is described, with the aim of determining how dynamical processes are reflected in such a distribution. It is shown how different dynamical situations which produce identical angular distributions in a standard (initially isotropic) photodissociation experiment can be directly distinguished in the dissociation of initially oriented molecules. The effect on the lab-frame distribution of the direction of the transition dipole and of the molecular-frame recoil angle is seen to be straightforwardly distinguishable, and specific illustrations are given of the increased persistence of information about the shape of the molecule-fixed (dynamical) recoil distribution.
