✦ Synopsis
Structural elements of light weight and relatively high fundamental frequency are of great interest in certain technological situations: e.g., aircraft and space applications. The theme, dynamic stiffening, requires rather difficult mathematical formulations which may well lead to impractical engineering solutions, but several studies have been performed showing that by introducing simple variations of the thickness one is able to reduce the weight of beams while keeping constant or even increasing its fundamental frequency. The present investigation constitutes an attempt to attain dynamic stiffening of clamped and simply supported plates of regular polygonal shape by reducing the thickness over a concentric, circular region. Consideration of a hydrostatic state of in-plane pressure allows the determination of the buckling pressure in a unified manner.
