✦ Synopsis


Numerical experiments performed on vibrating orthogonal beam grillages rigidly clamped at two adjacent edges are reported. The first five natural frequencies of transverse vibrations have been determined by using a finite element code developed at the Solid Mechanics Division of Universidad Nacional del Sur, for which Timoshenko's mathematical model has been implemented. By introducing discontinuities in the beam components it is possible to attain structural weight reduction and an increase in the fundamental frequency. Accordingly, dynamic stiffening is achieved.
