✦ Synopsis

The dynamic stability of a free-free Timoshenko beam with a concentrated mass is analyzed when a pulsating follower force P 0 + P 1 cos Vt is applied. The discretized equation of motion is obtained by the finite element method, and then the method of multiple scales is adopted to investigate the dynamic instability region. The effects of axial location and translation inertia of the concentrated mass are studied. The change of combination resonance types due to P 0 , the relationship between critical forces and widths of instability regions in the vicinity of 2v 1 (twice the first natural frequency of the bending vibration), and the effect of shear deformation are also examined.
