โœฆ Synopsis

Ahstraet-This paper discusses the importance of dynamic interaction (coupling) between heavy vehicles and highway bridges. A new method for calculating the dynamic response of bridges to dynamic wheel loads is presented, and used to investigate a simply-supported bridge traversed by a single degree of freedom vehicle model. Six non-dimensional parameters of the bridge-vehicle system are varied to assess the amount of interaction between the vehicle and the bridge. Guidelines are presented to ascertain when dynamic interaction is important and when it can be ignored.

A calculation procedure is developed to predict the dynamic response of a bridge to a given set of vehicle wheel loads. The dynamic interaction between a moving vehicle and the sustaining bridge is studied. By the method of modal superposition, closed-form solutions are obtained for the vertical responses of both the bridge and moving vehicle, assuming the vehicle/bridge mass ratio to be small. A simple and e!ective procedure for conducting the free vibration test on highway bridges is presented. The impulsive force in each direction is generated by a loaded truck that either stops suddenly or falls down from a rigid block. The feasibility of the procedure is demonstrated in identi"cation
