Synopsis
Strength and toughness of various sintered and HiPed duplex ceramics are investigated. It is found that the strength is reduced and the toughness increased compared with the respective matrix data. The tran~[ormability of the Zr0 2 particles in the incorporated zones is examined. The retained strength of duplex ceramics after a mechanically introduced sulT[ace damage, i.e. their mechanical damage resistance, is improved when compared to the pure matrix. An attempt is made to relate normalized strength, normalized toughness, and mechanical damage resistance of duplex ceramics to an internal stress intensity .
