Dungeons & Dragons es un juego de rol de fantasía heroica que no necesita de un tablero; se juega solo con lápiz, papel y dados. Originalmente diseñado en Estados Unidos por Gary Gygax y Dave Arneson y publicado en 1974 por la compañía de Gygax, Tactical Studies Rules (TSR), esta primera edición de Dungeons & Dragons es bien conocida por ser el principio de los juegos de rol modernos y, por consiguiente, de la industria de los juegos de rol (Role Playing Games) y de los videojuegos RPG.
Desde su aparición, ha sido publicado en gran número de ediciones, muchas de ellas traducidas al castellano, conservando siempre el nombre original en inglés. Aunque en España se usó Dragones y mazmorras y en Hispanoamérica Calabozos y dragones, para titular la serie animada y las dos primeras películas basadas en el juego.
