En dag i maj 1637 kommer duen Iris til en nonne, der til sin store overraskelse finder et brev bundet til dens ben. Hun besvarer brevet, og snart er en korrespondence ved hjælp af brevduen kommet i stand mellem nonnen, der har viet sig til Gud efter hendes elskedes forsvinden og den ukendte mand, der har trukket sig tilbage fra verden efter at være blevet bedraget af sin tilkommende.
Den mandlige brevskriver viser sig at være Antoine de Bourbon, greve af Moret, uægteskabelig søn af Henrik IV og halvbroder til Ludvig XIII af Frankrig.
I virkelighedens verden døde han af sine sår efter slaget ved Castelnaudary i 1632, men der knytter sig forskellige myter til hans person, og om han virkelig døde dengang. I de nogle og fyrre breve, som denne lille roman består af, spinder Dumas en anden ende over hans skæbne fra Castelnaudary og frem til 1638.
