โœฆ Synopsis

This book is an excellent introduction to probability and statistics, with statistical programming in SAS, MINITAB and BMDP. The only prerequisite is basic algebra, the text being developed for first courses in elementary probability and statistics. The amount of material, and topics, have been carefully chosen to be most valuable for students in most fields a t this introductory level.

Part I, Chapters 1 to 7, develops ideas of statistical description (Chapter I), rules of probability needed t o quantify chances (Chapters 24), the notions of random variables and their probability distributions means and variance (Chapter 5 ) , the binomial distribution in particular (Chapter 6). and normal approximation (Chapter 7). This has set the stage for the major areas of modem statistics, presented in Part 11: Point and interval estimation (Chapter 8), hypothesis testing (Chaptar 9), linear regreasion and correlation (chapter lo), goodness-of-fit chi-square test (Chapter 11). independence in r xc contingency tables (Chapter 12). nnalysis of variance (ANOVA) and design (Chapter 13). medians and nonparametric statistics (Chapter 14), statistical selection and decision (Chapter 15).
