In 1927 Koller reported that he was able to induce a dispersion of the black pigment in white-adapted Crangon by transfusion of blood from a black adapted one. He concluded that this was due to a hormonal substance circulating in the blood since a similar transfusion of blood from a white adapted animal to another one of similar adaptation did not result in darkening. The data which he obtained in these experiments appeared quite conclusive.c The following year Perkins ('28) described the eyestalk as the source of a hormonal substance which concentrated the red pigment of Palaemonetes, and the same year Koller ('28) confirmed Perkins ' work, using Crangon and other crustaceans.
