✦ Synopsis

Abstract

This article presents a bandwidth improvement of a compact dual‐band slot antenna for 1.54/1.83 GHz cellular applications using a spiral‐like electromagnetic band gap (SEBG) structures. The rectangular slotted radiating element is surrounded by a SEBG. The antenna size is very compact (60 mm Γ— 60 mm Γ— 2.47 mm) and can be integrated easily with other radio frequency (RF) front‐end circuits. The working frequency of the patch antenna falls inside the electromagnetic band gap band gap which will lead to the suppression of the surface waves. The simulation is carried out using the finite difference time domain analysis technique. The bandwidth of SEBG antenna is 93.2% and 11.75% increased at lower and higher resonant frequency respectively than the patch. The EM simulated return loss, gain, directivity, radiation pattern, antenna efficiency, and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) are presented for proposed antenna array. Good agreement is achieved between the simulated and measured results. Β© 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 54:477–482, 2012; View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary.com.
