✦ Synopsis

Bienvenue a cette Cdition parisienne de D&pBts Chimique en Phase Gazeuse, ou CVD !

The coming together of a EUROCVD meeting (EUROCVD 11) and an International CVD meeting (CVD-XIV) is an exciting prospect that is made all the more alluring by being held in Paris, that romantic, vivacious city where at times it seems that the river is the only sane thing! Although this is the first time that the two conferences have been united in one forum, as you can read in this issue of CVD in the nostalgic trip down memory lane by the "father" of CVD, Dr. John Blocher, there have previously been two lnternational CVD meetings in Europe, one in England in 1975 and one in France in 1981. These two earlier international conferences were obviously highly successful, and there is no doubt that this third European occasion will also be memorable for the quantity and quality of the scientific contributions. At the meeting there will be more than 240 lectures and poster presentations in sessions on Fundamentals, Modeling, Diagnostics and Characterization, MOCVD, Metallization, CVI and Interfacial Coatings, Dielectrics, Ferroelectrics, Hard Coatings and Ceramics, and Electronic and Optoelectronic Materials. CVD is pleased and proud to be associated with the meeting, and in this Paris edition there is a selection of contributions which nicely illustrate the type of articles we have published in the journal over the last two years.

CVD was launched in July 1995 as a section within the well-established and highly cited journal Advanced Materials. The purpose was to provide, without adding another publication to the rapidly growing journal mountain that already exists, an opportunity for those working in the area of CVD to have a centralized forum for their work i n a very respected journal. The complex, interdisciplinary nature of the technique of CVD requires the skills and input o l chemists, physicists, engineers and materials scientists, and in the past CVD publications have often appeared in journals most closely related to the disciplines of the authors. Since the appearance of CVD there has been the possibility for authors from a wide range of disciplines to submit [
