✦ Synopsis

duction followed by a detailed section giving a step-by-step account of the method being discussed. Each chapter also contains details of the pitfalls and how they may be counteracted. Thus the researcher is presented with all the essential information that is necessary to undertake the cloning of NPY (part 1), the production of transgenic and `knockout' rats and mice (part 2) the essentials of antisense technology (part 3) and techniques for studying the distribution of mRNA in tissue samples. The ®nal part of the monograph consists of three chapters on the characterisation of NPY receptors and the quanti®cation of NPY mRNA. Each chapter concludes with a list of up-to-date references.

In conclusion, this is an excellent `cookbook' that will appeal to both the basic and clinical neuroscientist who wishes to study the physiological or pathological effects of this important neuropeptide. The book is nicely produced and the cloth binding gives it the added robustness necessary should it be used at the laboratory bench!
