Book editor's note: Academic physicians know and admire many of the other academic physicians who write books. It is almost impossible to find reviewers for manuscripts or books who do not know the authors or investigators of the books or papers they are asked to review. Admiration, which is not universal, should not be a criterion for disqualification. The alternative, to choose reviewers because they do not admire the author, would be a form of "selection bias" and would tend to guarantee a type of one-tailed prejudice. In answer to the question, "Can you review this book objectively?", the reviewer replied, "Of course!". The Book Editor welcomes readers' comments on this issue.
