Abstract

Notable differences are found in the size distribution of raindrops reaching the ground from frontal clouds exhibiting a radar melting‐band which is indicative of Bergeron‐type rain; from small, warm shower clouds in which the rain is formed by coalescence; and from thunderstorms. These differences are illustrated by typical drop‐size spectra and by plots of median‐volume drop diameter against rainfall intensity for the three classes.
