9 juin 1865. Charles Dickens, alors âgé de
53 ans et au faîte de son art et de sa gloire, regagne Londres en
secret en compagnie de sa maîtresse à bord du train de marée. Soudain, à
Staplehurst, l'Express déraille. Tous les wagons de première classe
s'écrasent en contrebas du pont, à l'exception de celui de Dickens.
Indemne, « l'écrivain le plus célèbre du monde », comme on le surnomme,
tente de se porter au secours des survivants. Au fond du ravin, sa route
croise celle d'un personnage à l'allure spectrale qui va désormais
l'obséder : Drood.
De retour à Londres, Dickens confie le secret de
son étrange rencontre à son ami Wilkie Collins, écrivain lui aussi, à
qui il reviendra de relater les dernières années de la vie de celui
qu'il appelle, avec autant d'admiration que d'ironie, l'Inimitable. À la
poursuite de Dickens, qui a cessé d'écrire pour hanter les bas-fonds -
cryptes, cimetières et catacombes - de Londres, Collins cherche à
comprendre quels rapports unissent désormais l'Inimitable et
l'inquiétant Drood. Mais peut-on vraiment porter foi au récit halluciné
de Collins, opiomane en proie à la paranoïa ?
