โฆ Synopsis
On July 15, 1954 Dr. Willy KRIEGER, one of the greatest and most famous of desmidiologists suddenly died .
His name is known in the first place by his work : "Die Desmidiaceen Europas mit Berucksichtigung der ausseneuropaischen Arten", which was appearing in issues in Rabenhorst's,,Kryptogamenflora von Deutschland and der Schweiz" . Of this work fifteen issues were planned, but only five appeared. Nevertheless this work is one of those that desmidiologists all over the world use most .
The author was born in Berlin on October 21, 1886 . His father was a wood-merchant who had a large business of foreign woods . Initially it was Willy KRIEGER's desire to continue the business of his father, yet after a short time he became a teacher.

He also was one of the most regular members of the "Deutsche Botanische Gesellschaft" and for many years he was entrusted with the secretaryship of this society .
He made many long journeys to Iceland, the Caucasus, Roumania, Dalmatia, Finland, and on all these journeys he composed large collections for his works .
He entertained a busy correspondence with most algologists of the world and in many cases it was to him that collections were sent to determine the algae and in the first place the Desmids . Thus we see that one of his works is a study of the Desmids of THIENEMANN & RUTTNER'S "Deutsche Limnologische Sunda-Expedition" .
