✦ Synopsis

Following the death of Robert Berne in October 2001, an award was sponsored by the Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) of the University of Virginia where Dr. Berne spent the majority of his career. This award would be given every 4 years at the International Symposium on Adenosine and Adenine Nucleotides. Each awardee will be given a cash prize and an inscribed plaque, and invited to give a retrospective talk about his/her work. There also is a plaque inscribed with the names of awardees that is maintained in the CVRC office in Charlottesville. The plaques are inscribed as follows: ''Dr. Robert M. Berne Award for Lifetime Achievement in Adenosine Re-search. This award is given in recognition of the awardee's contribution to adenosine research, and in memory of Dr. Robert M. Berne's lasting contributions to our understanding of the role of adenosine in biology and medicine.''

The award will be given to honor a senior investigator whose accumulated lifetime work has had a major impact on our understanding of adenosine in biology and medicine.
