have significantly contributed to our present understanding of the invasive and metastatic behavior of cancer cells.
The work of Dr. Fidler has provided new insights into the properties of metastatic cells. His experiments have demonstrated that metastases may have a clonal origin and that different metastases may originate from the proliferation of single but different progenitor cells present in the primary neoplasm. More recently, Dr. Fidler has studied the role that macrophages might play in the growth and regression of cancer metastases.
k. Liotta has shown that proteolytic, especially collagenolytic activities, directly participate in the degradation of normal tissues by a variety of animal and human cancer cells. These processes can contribute to the establishment of metastases in other organs. Dr. Liotta has proposed experimental ways to control them.
Each prize winner receives SFr. 200,000.00 to support his cancer research.
