โœฆ Synopsis

Dow, BASF to build PO plant

Dow Chemical and BASF are proceeding with plans to erect a plant making propylene oxide (PO) using a hydrogen peroxide-based route that the companies have collaborated on for over a year. The plant will be at BASF's integrated chemical complex in Antwerp, Belgium, and is due onstream in 2008 with an initial capacity of 300,000 tonnes. The hydrogen peroxide will come from a 200,000 tonne/y BASF/Solvay jv plant to be erected at Antwerp. Pending approvals by the respective companies, the plant will go onstream ready to supply the new PO plant. The Dow/BASF process uses hydrogen peroxide to oxidize propylene to PO and water. Hydrogen peroxide maker Degussa and Germany's Uhde have also been working on a hydrogen peroxide-based route to PO. Sasol is considering a 60,000 tonne/y plant using their method at Midland, S Africa, for commissioning by 2007. Japan's Sumitomo Chemical has built a PO plant in Chiba, Japan, that uses a cumene peroxidation process with a co-product that can be recycled back into cumene.
